Establishing a Foundation for Success: An Interview with Head Men's Basketball Coach Nicolas Gehler
As the new basketball season approaches at San Diego Miramar College, head coach Nicolas Gehler is preparing his team for the challenges and opportunities ahead. With a focus on building a strong culture of excellence, Coach Gehler is optimistic about what this year holds.
On Team Culture and Success
When asked about the foundation for the team's success, Coach Gehler emphasizes the importance of a positive culture:
"The culture that we have created is a culture of excellence here at Miramar. We believe that playing hard, playing smart, having a great attitude, and combining those with energy and effort in and out of the classroom will create team success."
On Potential and Growth
Regarding the potential for the current team, Coach Gehler shares his enthusiasm for the group:
"This team we have this year has a lot of potential and room for growth. I am most excited about the development of these guys over the course of the season and look forward to watching them build an exciting team."
On Experience Compared to Other Teams
Coach Gehler discusses the challenges posed by the team's inexperience relative to other squads in the league:
"The margin between us and the other teams is our experience. We have a young group who has skill and talent but has yet to be tested at the higher levels. As we gain experience, this group will be able to achieve their goals as they learn to play together and understand the importance of the team."
On Excitement and Goals for the Season
When asked about his excitement for the team and the potential for postseason success, Coach Gehler reflects on the upcoming challenges:
"I really like the group and their development to this point. The first few weekends will be a good test for us, and we are excited about the challenge. It is too early to talk about conference and playoffs. With that said, I am excited about the opportunity that lies ahead."
On Key Returners
Coach Gehler highlights the contributions of returning players and their importance to the team's success:
"I am excited about our returners. They have worked hard, and they look to be contributors early. Takoma and David Angulo have had a good summer and pre-season workouts, and we look for their leadership. Bol has developed nicely this past year and has matured as a basketball player and will add some needed defense. Malik will be a load to handle inside. He is bigger, faster, and stronger than last year, and we look for him to be a force."
On Newcomers to the Team
Discussing the team's new players, Coach Gehler explains their adjustment to the program:
"The rest of our team is made up of newcomers. Whether they are a four-year kickback or a true freshman, they are all learning our system. We require them to get up early for weights and treatment, and then we practice immediately after that. This is an adjustment in itself. Their sleep, hydration, and nutrition become a premium in our system as they adjust to early, tough, demanding workouts. Who do I like? Well, Ah-Zion looks like he belongs immediately. He is going to be good in time. Elijah is making big strides as he learns how to play multiple positions. Raymond is a workhorse who does so many things for us. We also have a group of red-shirts who will contribute at some point when their time is called. MJ, David V., and others will be called upon to contribute."
On the Difference in This Season Compared to Last
Addressing the question of whether this season feels different, Coach Gehler shares insights about the youthful roster:
"It does feel a bit different just because we are so young. That is the challenge though. We have to teach, coach, and mentor. It is exciting."
On Adjustments for the Coaching Staff
When discussing changes for the coaching staff this season, Coach Gehler outlines their approach:
"As a staff, we will need to be a bit more patient and will most likely have a bigger rotation early."
On What to Expect from This Season
Finally, when asked what he would tell potential fans about the upcoming season, Coach Gehler expresses his enthusiasm:
"This is going to be an exciting season. We have a great group of young student-athletes who are eager to learn and hungry to compete. You will certainly see a good brand of basketball. I always tell people that do not know this level that they will be shocked at how good it is. Most think the level is beneath them, but in reality, those are the ones that just don't know how competitive and good it is. On any given night, you will be matched up against a Division I and Division II player. It is competitive, so please come out and watch!"
As the team prepares to kick off the season this weekend with a tournament in Ventura, the excitement is palpable. Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling year for Miramar basketball!
