Our 2023-24 Men's Basketball Team and Q&A with Head Coach
Q&A with Men's Basketball Head Coach Nick Gehler
Q: What are you most looking forward to with this new season?
I am most looking forward to teaching and coaching this young new group. We do not have the same in-game experience that we had the last couple of years, so this group brings a new competitive fire, willingness to learn, and great attention to detail. I also look forward to watching the team progress and embrace the culture that has been developed and implemented by teams of the past. We have one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in the state so our team will be tested early. We look forward to the challenge.
Q: How have the preparations and practices been going?
Preparation is paramount. We cannot mistake the necessary preparation that is needed to compete early and develop that concept throughout the season. This certainly is a marathon and not a sprint. Practices have been very physical and very competitive. We have developed a system that demands the attention, mental, and physical attributes that mirror a live contest. Preparation is separation.
Q: How do you feel about the team and their talent/skills as a whole?
I really like the team. We have new players at each position and each one brings great strengths. We must continue to improve our skill set and have that translated into the games. We have some really nice pieces and this will be a work in progress.
Q: What is your team goal for the season?
Our team goal is very simple...We want to compete and execute at a high level each and every game. As we improve on that the team will make strides in the right direction and embrace the culture that has been instilled.
Q: What do you love most about coaching at Miramar?
I have been here for eighteen years and have been a part of the development and implementation of each and every athletic team here at Miramar. It is an absolute privilege to be a part of that. There are not a whole lot of coaches and or athletic directors that have been a part of the absolute ground floor development. This includes starting new intercollegiate teams, hiring great people, and building facilities. That same privilege bleeds into my coaching. It is a privilege to teach and coach young student-athletes. I love teaching. I love the people I work with and I love the competition.
