Miramar Athletics Appoints Gino Gamboa As New Men's Volleyball Coach
May 24, 2023

With the end of Miramar MVB's 2023 PCAC championship season, efforts turned to finding the replacement for retiring head coach John Landicho. The search did not progress far as Director of Athletics Nick Gehler kept the hire in-house, by elevating assistant coach Gino Gamboa to the head coach's role, effective immediately.

Gamboa rises to the head coach's position after joining Jets MVB midway through the 2023 season as an assistant coach. He played an important part in the Jets' sizzling second half of the season, in which they defeated then-#4 ranked San Diego Mesa twice in their three conference matches to capture the 2023 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) championship. Miramar's eight-match winning streak through the PCAC schedule was then ended by eventual 2023 CCCAA men's volleyball champion Orange Coast College, in the CCCAA quarterfinals. Gamboa's work would help seven Jets to All-PCAC honors, including 2023 PCAC MVB Athlete of the Year Jack LeDuff. Gamboa joins returning associate head coach Ryan Millar OLY to continue Jets MVB's tradition of exceptional knowledge and experience within its coaching staff.

"What an exciting day for San Diego Miramar College," Gehler said. "We are thrilled to welcome Gino Gamboa as our second men's volleyball coach. The initial feedback I received when going through this process was Gino is the guy to carry on the tradition that John Landicho has built. Gino does what the JETS do. He teaches. He develops. He challenges. He inspires and drives. Welcome Gino!"

With an extensive volleyball resume stretching from the high school & junior club scene to international men's volleyball league play, Gamboa also serves currently as an indoor and beach coach for Wave Volleyball Club in San Diego. He has also held multiple positions for Main Beach VBC, Mountain View VBC, Harvard Westlake HS, Surfside VBC, and Los Angeles Volleyball Academy. Gamboa also has professional experience as an exercise therapist, exercise specialist, physical therapy aide, and personal trainer.

As a player, Gamboa played four years at NCAA D-III UC Santa Cruz, before logging time professionally overseas In the BUCs League and NVL Super League in England, and in the Danish 1st Division. He has also played domestically in the National Volleyball Association (NVA).

Gamboa holds a Master's in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Northumbria University (England),and a Bachelor's in Human Biology from UC Santa Cruz.
