Bio

Matthew Cain enters his third year as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, while also serving as the Director of Strength and Conditioning in the Athletic Department.

Prior to San Diego Miramar College, he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at CSU -Dominguez Hills. As an assistant coach, Cain assisted in all facets of the program, including travel, scouting, on the floor coaching, film exchange, recruiting, and administrative duties. Cain also served as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for CSU -Dominguez Hills, California Baptist University, and El Camino College, and was a Kinesiology Faculty Member at CSU - Dominguez Hills and El Camino College.

As a point guard and team captain at CSU - Dominguez Hills, he received the following awards:

  • Dr. Richard Butwell Award
  • Dr. Hal Charnofsky Male Scholar Athlete of the Year
  • Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award
  • CCAA All-Academic Awards
  • Most Outstanding Kinesiology Major Award

Cain was also part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at CSU - Dominguez Hills. Prior, Cain captained and competed at MiraCosta College, where he was a scholar-athlete and the team MVP during the 2010-2011 season.

Cain earned his PhD in Exercise Science – Health and Human Performance from Concordia University Chicago in May 2019. His dissertation investigated – Various Forms of Resistance to Potentiate Vertical Jump Performance and Determination of Potentiation Duration. His research interests are the following: Post-Activation Potentiation, Vertical Jump Performance, and Accommodating Resistance Impact on Athletic Performance, among other topics. He has been published in the NSCA Strength and Conditioning Journal, International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, Journal of Canadian Chiropractic Association, and ACE’s Expert and Fit Life Articles. He currently serves as a writer and manuscript reviewer for various strength and conditioning, and fitness organizations, and also, serves as a presenter and an expert contributor within the field of exercise science. He is also a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Cain has also earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology from CSUDH in 2013, and his Master of Science degree from CBU in Kinesiology with a focus in Exercise Science and Sport Management in 2014.

He is a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC), and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA. In addition, he has also received his Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification (Pn1), among other certifications.

Cain is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Exercise Science, Health & Nutrition at San Diego Miramar College. He also serves as the Director of the Personal Training and Yoga Programs, and is the Advisor for the Human Movement Club.
