San Diego Mesa College cross country runner Grace Hanshaw and San Diego Miramar water polo player Arianna Womack share this week’s Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Athlete of the Week award.
Hanshaw, a freshman from Westview High School, clocked a 19:35.90 on a 5,000-meter course at Mission Bay to place fourth out of 100 runners in the San Diego Cross Country Invitational.
Hanshaw led the Olympics to a second-place finish out of 11 teams. She was beaten only by Laura Aceves, the race winner from East Los Angeles, and three runners from defending state team champion Orange Coast.
Womack scored 17 goals and also had 11 assists in five games for the Jets during the week. The freshman out of Mira Mesa High School is fifth in the state in goals with 42 and also 10th in the state with 27 assists. She also has 16 steals.
Womack began the week by scoring a fourth-quarter goal that brought Miramar to within one goal of San Diego Mesa. The Jets barely missed an upset against the Olympians, losing 6-5.
Over the weekend, Womack tallied 16 goals and dished off 10 assists in four games in the San Diego Classic that was co-hosted by the Jets and Mesa. She tallied five goals in a 12-11 loss to Cypress, three goals in a 12-6 loss to Mt. SAC, four goals in a 17-13 victory over Los Angeles Trade Tech and four goals in a 13-7 win over East Los Angeles.
Honorable mention went to Miramar soccer goalkeeper Stephanie Carlson and volleyball players Megan Kurz of state No. 1-ranked Grossmont, Bethany Nosco from Mesa and Jaclyn Kreymorg of San Diego City College.
Carlson, a freshman from Mira Mesa High, shut out Mesa as the Jets and Olympians, two teams that have dominated the PCAC in recent years, tied 0-0. She had eight saves.
Kurz, a transfer from NCAA Division II Pace University who was named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Freshman team in 2012, is one of the key reasons top-ranked Grossmont is unbeaten at 15-0 vs. California teams. The sophomore from Patrick Henry High School, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, had 14 kills in the Griffins’ 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) win over Palomar. She had 10 kills (1 error) in their 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-18) victory vs. Southwestern. On the week, Kurz hit .400 with 24 kills and only six errors on 45 attempts.
Nosco, a sophomore outside hitter from Hesperia High School who was an all-state selection last season after red-shirting at San Diego State, had 13 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, an ace, seven digs and three blocks in 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-14) sweep over Imperial Valley. She had 17 kills (0 errors) on 25 attempts, a .680 hitting percentage, two aces and a block as Mesa held off San Diego City 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 15-6).
Kreymborg, a sophomore libero from Franklin High in Sacramento, had 85 digs last week, 39 in a 3-1 (25-11, 23-15, 25-17, 25-18) win over Mt. San Jacinto and 46 vs. Mesa.
