San Diego Miramar College soccer player Stephanie Carlson has been selected as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Athlete of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.
Carlson, Miramar’s freshman goalkeeper from Mira Mesa High School, has played a huge role as the Jets have gone 15-2-3 while winning the PCAC Northern Division championship and advancing to the second round of the Southern California playoffs.
On Friday, she recorded her ninth shutout of the season, notching three saves as the Jets defeated Citrus 6-0 in their first regional game.
Carlson’s shutouts have come against PCAC Southern Division champion San Diego Mesa in a 0-0 tie, Palomar twice, Southwestern, San Diego City College, Mt. San Jacinto, Imperial Valley and Grossmont. She’s combined with teammate Karolina Salazar on two other shutouts.
Carson has allowed 0.66 goals per game and has an .850 save percentage.
Honorable mention went to Mesa soccer goalkeeper Elizabeth Stabile, Mesa cross country runner Grace Hanshaw and basketball players Brianna Davis of Southwestern and Cora Lopez from Mt. San Jacinto.
Stabile, a sophomore from Cathedral Catholic High School who received Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 22, recorded nine saves as the Olympians tied Cypress 1-1 in the first round of the playoffs. The Chargers advanced on penalty kicks.
Hanshaw, a freshman from Westview High School and an Athlete of the Week honoree for the week that ended Oct. 6, ran 5,000 kilometers in 18:10.47 to place fifth in the CCCAA state finals at Woodward Park in Fresno. She led the Mesa to ninth place.
Davis, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Otay Ranch High School, is averaging 11.8 rebounds per game for the Jaguars, who have jumped out to a 5-0 start to the season. Last week she had 13 rebounds (and 11 points) in a 68-57 win over Los Angeles Trade Tech and contributed 15 rebounds in a 68-47 victory over El Camino Compton Center.
Lopez, a 6-foot-0 sophomore forward from Hemet High School, was tournament MVP after leading the Eagles to the championship of the Lady Vikings Hi-Desert Classic at Barstow College. Lopez scored 26 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a 77-61 win over host Barstow in the championship game. Earlier, she had 13 points and 14 boards in an 80-73 victory over Porterville and had eight points and 17 rebounds in a 60-59 win vs. Los Angeles Pierce.
