Jets' CCCAA playoff drive, win streak end with loss to Grossmont
Miramar MVB's drive to make the 2017 CCCAA playoffs, as well as its six-match win streak and '17 season, came to an end with a four-set loss to fellow PCAC co-champion Grossmont, at the Griffins' gym.
The Jets won a hotly contested set one 25-23, before the Griffins would take the next two sets. Miramar led much of set four, including 20-16, before a 9-3 Grossmont run ended the match. The loss leaves Miramar and Grossmont tied for the conference championship with identical 5-1 records, but the Griffins will advance to the state playoffs via the PCAC's seeding tiebreaker matrix.
OH Levi Vermeulen led the Jets effort with 18 kills, 3 blocks, and 6 digs. Fellow OH Grant Dunlop added 13 kills and 5 digs, while OPP Zach Wissing tallied 7 kills and 9 digs. MB Nik Gettman tallied 8 kills, while S Noly Mon racked up 45 assists.
The match was the last for sophomores Vermeulen, Wissing, Mon, AJ Alefi, Zoheb Khaliqi, and redshirt freshman Nate Briscoe. They leave having led the Jets to an amazing championship season, with a 9-5 record, a 5-1 PCAC record and a conference title, all in only the Jets' third season of existence. And with 11 players returning and an outstanding recruiting class coming in, Miramar MVB is poised for another season of excellence.
