Dec 17, 2014

The Miramar men's volleyball program is proud to announce its coaching staff and schedule for its inaugural season. The Jets welcome Mark Smith and David Ertley as assistant coaches, and look forward to a rigorous schedule 18-match 2015 schedule.

Veteran coach Mark Smith joins Miramar MVB with over twenty years' experience in men's volleyball. Smith is a former assistant coach with the men's volleyball teams at UC San Diego, Palomar College, and San Diego City College, arming him with important experience at the NCAA and community college levels. Smith has logged substantial time at the club level, as a member of the coaching staffs of Seaside VBC (San Diego's most successful boys volleyball club), and as the founder & director of the original Shorebreak VBC. He has been a clinician at Pepperdine and Stanford Universities, as well as for Seaside VBC. Smith has also been a successful high school coach, with 12 seasons' experience leading boys volleyball programs at Monte Vista, Serra, Santa Fe Christian, and San Diegueto Academy to multiple league titles and CIF playoff appearances. He is also active in USA Volleyball's High Performance program. Smith holds a M.A. from Azusa Pacific University, and a B.S. from San Diego Christian College.

David Ertley provides a great background in community college MVB, as a former player for Miramar head coach John Landicho. A member of the San Diego Mesa College MVB program from 2010-2012, Ertley was a winner of the team's Coaches' Award in 2011. Under Landicho's tutelage, he served in starting and reserve roles for the Olympians. Ertley has transitioned to a coaching career since leaving Mesa, serving with Seaside and San Diego VBC's and is on the coaching staff for Del Norte HS. He began work with the High Performance program of USA Volleyball in 2015. Ertley is a certified Emergency Medical Technician, holds an A.A. from Mesa, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree from Cal State San Marcos.

The Jets will take to the floor for the first time on January 29, when it travels to Southwestern College for a scrimmage with the Jaguars' club MVB team, supporting the Jags as they build support for their own intercollegiate MVB program. The first home match in Miramar MVB's history will be Friday, February 6th, when the Jets host four-time CCCAA state champion Irvine Valley College, at 4:00pm at Miramar's Hourglass Fieldhouse.
