Palomar College basketball player Aaron Roedl and San Diego Miramar basketball player Shane McPherson are the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference’s Men’s Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.
Roedl, a 6-foot-2 guard from Great Oak High School, knocked down six 3-pointers and scored 22 points in the Comets’ 68-66 loss to Miramar last Wednesday.
He pulled Palomar to within two points on a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining, then missed a 3-pointer that would have won the game at the buzzer.
McPherson, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward from San Marcos High School and a transfer from Humboldt State, went 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the Jets’ road conference victory over Palomar.
Two nights later, he scored 18 points, with performances of 5-for-7 shooting, 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc and 2-for-2 from the foul line, as Miramar advanced to 2-0 in the PCAC Northern Division by beating MiraCosta 73-59.
Three basketball players received honorable mention recognition – Mt. San Jacinto’s Danny Hopkins, Imperial Valley’s Miles Hamilton and Cuyamaca’s Terrence Cole.
Hopkins, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Arlington High School in Riverside, helped lift the state No. 7-ranked Eagles to their sixth win in a row, 64-54 over Palomar, scoring 15 points. He also had 11 points as Mt. San Jac clubbed Rio Hondo 91-59 in a non-conference game.
Hamilton, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard/forward from Calipatria High School, scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Arabs, who have gotten off to a 2-0 start in the PCAC South, defeated Southwestern 69-63.
Cole, a 6-foot-0 sophomore guard out of Helix High School, scored 22 points in leading the Coyotes past San Diego Mesa 77-66.
